The Test Assistant provides test services to support the operation and maintenance of substation and electrical equipment with direction from a Test Supervisor, Project Test Specialist, Test Specialist or Test Engineer. This position is a four (4) step progression that provides the experience and training necessary for an incumbent to be eligible for advancement to the Test Specialist classification

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

A Bachelor's degree in engineering or engineering technology OR Associates degree in electrical engineering or electrical technology OR formal education equivalent to an Associate's degree in math and science are required. Individual must hold a valid motor vehicle license. Individual will have to stand on call assignments. Also desirable:

Strong knowledge of and experience with transmission protection devices such as or similar to: carrier communication equipment, electro-mechanical and microprocessor relays, electrical protection principles and theories, electronic and computer controlled systems and devices, computer networking techniques and methods, National Electrical and National Electrical Safety Codes, relay and control operational and safety procedures, designing testing systems and equipment, strong organizational skills, utilizing interpersonal skills to communicate with coworkers, supervisor, etc.

1. Performs power factor and breaker timing tests.

2. Analyzes and interprets test results and presents findings for review.

3. Performs basic relay testing.

4. Performs technical calculations for test applications.

5. Performs cable proof tests.

6. Performs cable locating and fault locating services.

7. Assists with the installation and testing of mobile transformers.

8. Conducts bucket truck boom insulation integrity testing.

9. Locates sources of radio and television interference.

10. Performs prescribed tests on underground network protectors.

11. Performs and supports the troubleshooting, repairing, and testing of electrical devices such as recloser controls, battery chargers, voltage regulators, etc.

12. Adjusts and repairs substation recording and indicating meters other than watt hour meters.

13. Assists with substation modifications.

Test Assistant (Steps 1-4): This is a four step progression which provides the experience and training for an incumbent to be eligible for advancement to Test

Specialist. The selected candidate will be slotted at the appropriate level based upon theireducation/experience.No experience is required for level

1. Under direct supervision, individual provides test services to support the operation and maintenance of substation electrical equipment. Individual will provide test services to support theoperation, maintenance,and construction of substation and electrical equipment with direction from Test Supervisor,

Project Test Specialist or Test Specialist. Primary duties of the Test Assistant include but are not limited to: perform the following tests - power factor insulation testing, breaker timing testing, analyze and interpret test results and present findings for review;basic protectionrelay testing; technical calculations for test applications. Individual will also assist withannual transmissionline telecommunications testing.

Test Specialist (Steps 1-4): A minimum of 2 years of related experience is required with aBachelor's degreeOR 4 years of related experience are required with an Associate’s degree of formal education as noted above. Individual must have a working knowledge of substation equipment, understanding of and ability to properly and safely test equipment, and strong computer skills and the ability to operate a variety of software programs related to computer automated testing. Individual plans andperforms constructiontesting, maintenance testing, operations investigations, defective equipment testing and provides technical assistance services.

Project Test Specialist (Steps 1-2): Individual must currently hold the title of Project Test Specialist or have held this title in the past. Individual acts as project and/or crew leader and/or carries out assignments requiring engineering level expertise and extensive experience associated with planning and performing construction testing, maintenancetesting, investigationof electrical operating equipment, defective equipment testing and related technical assistance.
